Life is a Soundtrack

I love music.  I label myself as an “old school cat”.   My favorite old school music is Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye,  the Spinners and the O’Jays.  Close favorites are Stevie Wonder, Minnie Ripperton and Bobby Womack.  My new school favorites are Outkast, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae and the Late Great Amy Winehouse.

I also love all types of genres, from sophisticated jazz to ratchet rap.   The cord that ties it all together for me is that each song that I love represents a key part of my life.  I may not always articulate what I am feeling, but I can always find a song that will do the talking for me.

Music takes me to a place I have never been before. It is like a time machine.   Music is the perfect pairing to my imagination.  I wasn’t born in 1976 when the Spinners were at their peak, but when I listen to a Spinners classic I feel like I was somehow there.

Music makes me laugh, it makes me cry.  It makes me want to pick out my afro, put on some big hoop earrings and make some soap (its true!).   Some songs I have even “retired”, i.e. don’t listen to anymore because of what it reminds me of.

What is your favorite music?  What place does it take you?
